DESCRIPTION:Join SVP Partner and Board member Alexa Carver and Dila Perera\, Executive Director of Open Arms Perinatal Services\, to explore non-profit boards and governance.  \n																										 \nAlexa Carver currently operates an independent consulting firm\, Inspire Impact Consulting\, where she works with a wide variety of nonprofits and schools. For the past 15 years\, she has focused her work with boards and leadership teams on strategic thinking\, board development\, and equity in governance to inspire maximum mission impact for the organizations she works with. \n																										 \nDila Perera\, MPH\, MSW has worked in public health and advocacy locally and internationally\, including time spent as a doula for Open Arms. She earned both a Master of Public Health  in Maternal Child Health and Global Health as well as a Master of Social Work at the University of Washington. Dila became Executive Director of Open Arms in 2015 and is proud to lead Washington’s first and leading community-based nonprofit organization providing perinatal services. \nABOUT OUR NON-PROFIT LEARNING SERIESThis fall\, we are deep-diving into how non-profits are changing to center the voices of our Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color communities. DESCRIPTION:We are so excited to announce the date of our Fall Partner Meeting on  November 29. This is our first in-person meeting in nearly two years\, and we have a lot to talk about—including new programs\, new grantees\, and lots of new opportunities for you to get involved. \nHosted at the space of our new grantee\, CHOOSE 180. we will have tasty local food and a variety of drink options. Together we will celebrate\, preview the year ahead at SVP Seattle\, and explore how we can further our learning journey. \nSVP Seattle’s community has grown so much over these last few years\, with many new Grantees and Partners joining. We cannot wait to finally come together as a community outside of a Zoom square\, and we hope to see you there \nSVP is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our community. We ask that each attendee be prepared to show proof of COVID vaccination and take a rapid antigen test the day of the event. Masking is optional and rapid tests will be available at the event for those who have not had an opportunity to test. Please stay home if you test positive or if you have COVID or flu symptoms. DESCRIPTION:Nannies\, house cleaners\, home attendants and other domestic workers stand at the crossroads of racial\, gender\, immigrant\, and disability justice. Join Hand in Hand\, the Domestic Employers Network; Casa Latina; the Day Worker’s Center; and SVP Partner Jordan Goldwarg on October 6 at noon to learn more about this essential workforce. This program will cover the historic exclusion of domestic workers from legal protections and rights\, local and national advancements and current campaigns led by workers\, and what role we all can play in supporting fair care in our homes and communities. \nMi hogar es el lugar de trabajo de alguien: justicia racial\, equidad de género y derechos de las trabajadoras del hogar\nLas niñeras\, las empleadas domésticas\, las empleadas domésticas y otras trabajadoras domésticas se encuentran en la encrucijada de la justicia racial\, de género\, de inmigración y de discapacidad. Prior to joining Hand in Hand\, Dana worked for over two decades as a mediator\, and race equity trainer\, both on staff for organizations like the Washington State Bar Association and the Mediation Center of Dutchess County\, as well as a consultant. Dana became involved with the domestic worker rights movement in 2019 and served as a member of the Seattle Domestic worker standards board where she was the chair. Dana is also a member of the Washington State Labor & Industry advisory board for ending the exclusion of domestic workers eligibility for workers compensation. \nDana and her partner are East Coast transplants in Seattle who are raising their child far away from family and support networks\, and deeply appreciate the domestic workers in their lives who make it possible to hold together a household and work full-time. She is excited to continue that work as the Washington Organizer for Hand in Hand\, and to keep building the domestic workers rights movement in Seattle centered around care\, interdependence\, solidarity\, self-determination\, and dignity. \nJordan Goldwarg\nJordan Goldwarg is the Executive Director of OneWorld Now\, a youth development program that promotes global citizenship through a combination of world language study\, leadership workshops\, and study abroad. Much of his professional career has been spent helping youth unlock the leadership potential that they innately possess. A former high school history teacher\, he was previously the Seattle Chapter Director of Kids4Peace International\, a non-profit organization that brings together Muslim\, Jewish\, and Christian youth from the United States and Israel/Palestine for leadership development\, civic engagement\, and social change projects. \nOutside of OWN\, Jordan volunteers with a number of organizations\, including the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network and Common Power (a nonprofit that connects Seattle-based volunteers to on-the-ground civic volunteer opportunities–like voter registration and candidate canvassing–in states around the country). He also serves on the City of Seattle’s Domestic Workers Standards Board. Jordan and his husband also enjoy taking advantage of the amazing outdoor opportunities around Seattle\, especially skiing (cross-country and downhill)\, running\, cycling\, and hiking. \nSilvia Gonzalez\nSilvia González is a mother and has been an immigrant domestic worker for about 15 years. Silvia has combined her work of cleaning houses with work as a staff member of Casa Latina for the last five years. This helps her see the real needs of her compañerxs domestic workers and to make sure that their voices can be heard and that changes can be achieved in this labor sector.  Silvia has also been part of the Board of Directors of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) for three years\, where they are currently working on the Bill of Rights for domestic workers at the national level and the launch of Alia (portable benefits for workers who clean houses). Silvia played a very active role in the campaign to pass the bill of rights at the local Seattle level as an organizer for domestic workers at Casa Latina. Silvia is part of the standard board of domestic workers\, she is one of the co-presidents.

Futurewise will join us\, hosted by SVP Seattle Partner Alex Brennan. \n Alex Brennan is the Executive Director of Futurewise\, Washington State’s premier statewide land use advocacy organization\, founded in 1990. Since he became Executive Director in 2019\, he has built new successful campaigns to address climate change and housing affordability in state and local planning. Alex previously spent eight years as an organizer and planner at a community-based affordable housing provider in Seattle. Before that\, he worked as a real estate and economic development consultant. He holds a Master’s in City Planning from the University of California\, Berkeley. \n  \nOur ongoing Advocacy Affinity Group is a space for: \n\nA group of SVP Partners interested in advocacy\,\nWho eagerly show up for open meetings\, when they can or have specific ideas to promote\,\nGenerate excitement around advocacy initiatives (like creating a book group or getting behind a proposed state law) and generating action\,\nCreate an opportunity where Partners can learn from each other and share what advocacy they are doing\, and\nDetermine the focus and organization of this group going forward.\n\nWe meet on the third Monday of each month. DESCRIPTION:Join SVP Seattle at the We Give Summit\, where SVP Seattle leaders will be featured on two panels. \nMay 11th at 1 p.m.: We’ll be talking about the impact of reimagined giving that centers on collective action and community wisdom during a panel featuring Brad Brickman (SVP International and SVP Seattle Partner) and Terra Winston (Board Member of SVP International and SVP Chicago Partner). \nMay 12th at 1 p.m.: Emiko Atherton (SVP Seattle Executive Director)\, Hali Lee (Radiant Strategies)\, and Sudha Nandagopal (CEO of SVP international) will be talking about the impact of high net wealth donors of color in the U.S\, including Lee’s recent report exploring their themes\, aspirations\, priorities\, and life stories and the implications for philanthropic\, wealth\, finance\, and related sectors. \nThe We Give Summit\, produced by the global Philanthropy Together initiative\, is a celebration of collective giving. DESCRIPTION:Special Advocacy Affinity Group Meeting with guests Representative Noel Frame and Dr. Carolyn Brotherton \nIn this special meeting of SVP Seattle’s Advocacy Affinity Group\, we are hosting Washington State Representative Noel Frame and Dr. Carolyn Brotherton from the Economic Opportunity Institute to discuss wealth taxes in Washington. Following the presentation\, we will have a discussion about what role philanthropists and SVP Seattle have in advocating for taxes that work to change the racial wealth divide. \nAbout our guest speakers: \n \nState Representative Noel Frame \nShe has served in the Washington State Legislature since January 2016. She was motivated to run for office by a strong commitment to fully fund public schools by fixing our state’s regressive\, upside-down and unfair tax code. Born and raised in Washington state\, Noel is a former foster parent to two members of her own family. She is deeply committed to tackling the root causes of systemic issues facing families in crisis\, such as eradicating poverty and increasing access to quality healthcare. Noel works to give a voice to those who are often forgotten in policy conversations\, relying heavily on her nearly two decades of experience as an organizer to successfully navigate political systems. \nNoel is the Chair of the House Finance Committee and serves as Co-Chair of the Tax Structure Work Group. She also serves as a member of the House Appropriations and Community & Economic Development Committees. \n \nDr. Carolyn Brotherton \nCarolyn Brotherton holds a BS in Chemistry from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Harvard University. Before joining EOI\, she worked as the Government Relations Specialist for AFT Washington. Carolyn got into advocacy while helping to organize a union and negotiate a first contract for fellow postdoctoral researchers at the University of Washington. She interned with the Washington State Labor Council during the 2019 Legislative Session. Carolyn works on tax and higher education policy at EOI. \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Photo: A quote from Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail appears on the wall of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis\, Tennessee. \nJoin the SVP Seattle community for a study group and discussion on Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The Letter from a Birmingham Jail is a timeless and powerful work that helped to propel the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Initially written in April 1963 on whatever scraps of paper Dr. King could find while jailed for participating in non-violent demonstrations against segregation\, it served (and still serves) as a clear call to action for all U.S. residents who cared about racial justice and equity.  \nThe conversation will be led by Zenobia Jeffries Warfield\, an SVP Seattle Partner and the former executive editor of YES! Magazine.
