SUMMARY:Special Advocacy Affinity Group meeting with guests Representative Noel Frame and Dr. Carolyn Brotherton
DESCRIPTION:Special Advocacy Affinity Group Meeting with guests Representative Noel Frame and Dr. Carolyn Brotherton \nIn this special meeting of SVP Seattle’s Advocacy Affinity Group\, we are hosting Washington State Representative Noel Frame and Dr. Carolyn Brotherton from the Economic Opportunity Institute to discuss wealth taxes in Washington. Following the presentation\, we will have a discussion about what role philanthropists and SVP Seattle have in advocating for taxes that work to change the racial wealth divide. \nAbout our guest speakers: \n \nState Representative Noel Frame \nShe has served in the Washington State Legislature since January 2016. She was motivated to run for office by a strong commitment to fully fund public schools by fixing our state’s regressive\, upside-down and unfair tax code. Born and raised in Washington state\, Noel is a former foster parent to two members of her own family. She is deeply committed to tackling the root causes of systemic issues facing families in crisis\, such as eradicating poverty and increasing access to quality healthcare. Noel works to give a voice to those who are often forgotten in policy conversations\, relying heavily on her nearly two decades of experience as an organizer to successfully navigate political systems. \nNoel is the Chair of the House Finance Committee and serves as Co-Chair of the Tax Structure Work Group. She also serves as a member of the House Appropriations and Community & Economic Development Committees. \n \nDr. Carolyn Brotherton \nCarolyn Brotherton holds a BS in Chemistry from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from Harvard University. Before joining EOI\, she worked as the Government Relations Specialist for AFT Washington. Carolyn got into advocacy while helping to organize a union and negotiate a first contract for fellow postdoctoral researchers at the University of Washington. She interned with the Washington State Labor Council during the 2019 Legislative Session. Carolyn works on tax and higher education policy at EOI. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Letter From A Birmingham Jail discussion group
DESCRIPTION:Photo: A quote from Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail appears on the wall of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis\, Tennessee. \nJoin the SVP Seattle community for a study group and discussion on Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The Letter from a Birmingham Jail is a timeless and powerful work that helped to propel the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Initially written in April 1963 on whatever scraps of paper Dr. King could find while jailed for participating in non-violent demonstrations against segregation\, it served (and still serves) as a clear call to action for all U.S. residents who cared about racial justice and equity.  \nThe conversation will be led by Zenobia Jeffries Warfield\, an SVP Seattle Partner and the former executive editor of YES! Magazine. We will explore why the Letter was written (i.e. its purpose and goal)\, to whom it was addressed\, the impact it had on the struggle for civil rights\, and the legacy and learning it offers us today. \n  \nThis is a three-day series  \nMarch 16th 12:00PM-1:00PMMarch 17th 12:00PM-1:00PMMarch 18th 12:00PM-1:00PM

DESCRIPTION:Advocacy Basics\, Part 3 – PHILANTHROPIC ADVOCATES: How we get in our own way and why it’s imperative we change! \nSVP Seattle Partners Ruby Love and Sharon Chen\, joined by Guillermo Rogel Jr\, a professional lobbyist in Washington state\, will talk about how philanthropists working in advocacy can sometimes undermine our own effectiveness when we forget to think about equity issues in all phases of policy change — crafting\, passing\, as well as implementing. Using examples and stories that we have seen when working on racial justice and environmental issues\, we will lead a discussion about common blind spots and practical ideas for avoiding them. \nWorkshop Leads \nRuby Love\, SVP Partner and Board Member and Organization Strategist at Front and Centered \nRuby is an entrepreneur and strategist known for advocating for socially responsible business and community organizations. Her career has afforded relationships that have brought millions of much needed philanthropic support to the arts\, education\, STEM\, social services\, and advancing philanthropy. From an early age growing up with parents who led civil rights in her community\, she honed her skills as an activist\, organizer and leader for racial justice. She enjoys advising emerging entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders to unlock the keys to building a better world with racial equity and social justice always front and center. \nSharon Chen\, SVP Partner and Resource Manager at Front and Centered \nSharon is a results-oriented executive board member and non-profit sector strategist committed to transforming democratic systems and policies to center the voices of highly impacted communities. She has expertise in organizational development\, policy\, campaign development and equity strategies\, and is a tested programs and teams leader trained in the tech sector. \nPILOTING ADVOCACY WORKSHOPS! \nSVP Seattle is adding advocacy to its body of work that Partners can learn about and engage in. As part of the organization’s Reimagine work\, SVP is working to broaden the definition of philanthropy to include advocacy work and address systemic racism by engaging Partners in local and regional advocacy efforts.
