SUMMARY:PHILANTHROPIC ADVOCATES: How we get in our own way!
DESCRIPTION:Learn how philanthropists working in advocacy can sometimes undermine our own effectiveness when we forget to think about equity issues. \nSVP Seattle Partners Ruby Love and Sharon Chen\, joined by Guillermo Rogel Jr\, a professional lobbyist in Washington state\, will talk about how philanthropists working in advocacy can sometimes undermine our own effectiveness when we forget to think about equity issues in all phases of policy change — crafting\, passing\, as well as implementing. Using examples and stories that we have seen when working on racial justice and environmental issues\, we will lead a discussion about common blind spots and practical ideas for avoiding them. \n\n\nRSVP\n \nWorkshop Leads \nRuby Love\, SVP Partner and Board Member and Organization Strategist at Front and Centered \nRuby is an entrepreneur and strategist known for advocating for\nsocially responsible business and community organizations. Her career\nhas afforded relationships that have brought millions of much needed\nphilanthropic support to the arts\, education\, STEM\, social services\, and\nadvancing philanthropy. From an early age growing up with parents who\nled civil rights in her community\, she honed her skills as an activist\,\norganizer and leader for racial justice. She enjoys advising emerging\nentrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders to unlock the keys to building a\nbetter world with racial equity and social justice always front and\ncenter. \nSharon Chen\, SVP Partner and Resource Manager at Front and Centered \nSharon is a results-oriented executive board member and non-profit\nsector strategist committed to transforming democratic systems and\npolicies to center the voices of highly impacted communities. She has\nexpertise in organizational development\, policy\, campaign development\nand equity strategies\, and is a tested programs and teams leader trained\nin the tech sector. \nPILOTING ADVOCACY WORKSHOPS! \nSVP Seattle is adding advocacy to its body of work that Partners can\nlearn about and engage in. As part of the organization’s Reimagine work\,\nSVP is working to broaden the definition of philanthropy to include\nadvocacy work and address systemic racism by engaging Partners in local\nand regional advocacy efforts. Join us as we develop our advocacy\nprogramming\, give us real-time feedback\, and help us establish robust\nadvocacy education programming!
